I felt determined. I would not let my eyes close until I had some kind of answer! I did hear from God that night, but it wasn’t what I was expecting.
We had recently moved from New Jersey to New York and we were living with my parents. There were a lot of transitions – new schools, new jobs, new state, new church, new house, even a new baby!
Because of all the change, it felt like every area of our life had a giant question mark over it. As I laid in my bed that night, I pleaded with God to answer to even one of my many questions. I didn’t care which one!
Like a sobering wave His words hit me.
“Seek me for me. Not for answers.”
Somewhere in the midst of all my questions and uncertainty, I had decided all I needed from God was answers. As if Jesus’ life, death and resurrection were all so I could have some clearer direction in life.
As a tear dropped onto my pillow I finally understood. I could seek God for anything I wanted, but the real prize was Himself.
It can be easy to see the value in tangible answers and practical solutions. It’s not always easy to see how an invisible God is the answer and solution.
Before Jesus was handed over and put to death, he spoke with the disciples to warn them about all that would take place in the world.
I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.
John 16:33 (emphases added)
Did you catch that? ‘IN ME’ you may have peace. Notice that the part about suffering didn’t change! However, what really matters does. We can have internal peace because HE has conquered the world.
Father, above all else, we seek your face. Above all the problems, questions and struggles we may have, we seek you.
We trust you with all of our worries and anxiety. We place each one of them in your hand. Deal tenderly with our hearts as we know you, the good shepherd, do.
Give us peace, deep within us, knowing that you have overcome the world and hold all things together.
In Jesus’ conquering and precious name, AMEN.
