I truly believe that the most effective way to look forward is to look back.
In the past, setting goals felt like shopping for labels I wanted to place on my shirt like a name tag.
“Reader” Yes, I’ll take that one.
“Sticks to a budget” Yes, that’s a good one too!
“Lots of time outside” Of course, I need that also!
All these things are good and helpful and have served me well for the most part. But this year I took a slightly different approach. At the end of this year, I spent a good amount of time reflecting and reviewing all that this past year held- the struggles, the joys, the people and the lessons.
Though I make it a regular practice to reflect, something unexpected occurred this time. It felt like looking back at the past year allowed me to clearly see the ground beneath my feet right now. The starting line I stand on is clearly visible because I’ve taken time to look carefully at the path behind me.
So looking forward, I’m not plucking labels I’d like to slap on Erica. I’m simply setting my heart to continue walking on this road God clearly has me on.
This year, I’m not making resolutions, I’m saying prayers.
I’m asking God for grace to trust He is with me.
I’m asking for wisdom to handle the tasks He has placed in my hands.
I’m asking for grace to seek Him first and be filled with His spirit before all other things.
